Isolated Serial Ports and CAN-FD in Industrial Deployments

In industrial projects, the interfaces between the board and field equipment are where problems concentrate. Sensors, actuators and variable-frequency drives all inject interference into the bus, and inadequate interface design shows up as “it randomly crashes for no reason”.
Isolation is not optional
A non-isolated serial port on long cable runs, or sharing ground with high-power equipment, readily picks up interference through ground potential differences — and in severe cases can damage the host controller directly. Isolated serial ports break the electrical connection through optocouplers or digital isolators, and are a baseline requirement on industrial sites.
The 05A IPA-RK3588 industrial control board provides 4× RS-232/485 (isolated) and 1× CAN-FD. Four isolated serial ports is a generous allocation among comparable RK3588 boards — multi-axis equipment, PLCs, instruments and barcode readers can connect simultaneously without an external serial server.
Why CAN-FD suits industrial work better than classic CAN
CAN-FD supports higher rates in the data phase and can carry more complex control frames. For automotive, AGV, energy storage and motion control projects it is the current standard configuration. At selection time, distinguish between “supports CAN” and “supports CAN-FD” — the bandwidth gap is significant.
Plan display and vision together
IPA-RK3588 display output supports HDMI 2.1, MIPI-DSI and dual-channel LVDS. Dual-channel LVDS can drive industrial panels directly without an adapter board, while MIPI-DSI suits panel-type devices. Combined with RK3588’s own compute, one board can handle HMI display and vision processing at the same time.
Environmental ratings are the dividing line
IPA-RK3588 supports -20℃ to +70℃ operation with an MTBF of ≥ 50,000 hours, plus 2× gigabit Ethernet and optional Wi-Fi 6. These ratings are the watershed between an industrial board and a consumer development board — workshops, outdoor cabinets and uncooled equipment rooms are places where consumer boards generally do not survive.
Selection advice
If a project deploys in a controlled environment (office, server room), a consumer development board saves meaningful cost. But as soon as a workshop floor, unattended long-term operation or electrical interference is involved, the after-sales cost an industrial board avoids far exceeds the price difference. Specifications are on the IPA-RK3588 product page, and we are glad to assess suitability against your specific environment.
