RK3528 vs RK3566 for an fnOS NAS: A Practical Buying Guide

When it comes to building a budget fnOS NAS, the Rockchip RK3528 and RK3566 are the two platforms people ask about most. Both sit on the same low-power ARM path, but their positioning, expansion and community-image maturity differ — so it is worth reading the differences before you buy.

Positioning: a router SoC vs a multimedia SoC

The RK3528 targets cost-sensitive routing and set-top-box designs, with the emphasis on network throughput and low power; it typically appears on industrial router boards with an integrated switch. The RK3566 targets multimedia and entry-level NAS boxes — its SDK and ecosystem around storage and decoding are more mature, and the installed base of set-top boxes and development boards is huge.

fnOS image availability today

For the RK3566, ARM fnOS images and one-click tools are already mature in the community, with multiple builds to choose from. The RK3528 rides the official beta program plus community ports, and working installs are documented too. If you want more tutorials and fewer surprises, the RK3566 ecosystem is currently smoother; if industrial form factor and networking matter more, RK3528 boards win.

Expansion and long-term reliability

For a NAS, the deciding hardware is SATA/USB 3.0 expansion and power design — which depend on the board far more than the SoC. Mass-market boxes offer limited expansion, while industrial and development boards are generally cleaner in layout. For 24/7 operation, industrial-grade components and thermal design usually matter more than benchmark numbers.

How to choose

Already own a spare RK3566 box → flash it; tutorials are mature and the cost is near zero.
Buying hardware from scratch, and want NAS / soft router / gateway in one → consider an RK3528 industrial router board.
Need stronger performance and more drive bays → look at higher-tier RK3576 / RK3588 NAS solutions.

For the second path, Hugsun’s 03R EDGE-RT28 (RK3528) Industrial Router Board offers an industrial design with multi-gigabit Ethernet — a dependable low-power choice for combined NAS/soft-router duty. If performance requirements are higher, check the 04A NAS-RK3588 Network Storage Board. Platforms and form factors are both available for OEM/ODM customization — get in touch.
