GMS or AOSP TV Box? Certification, Markets and Cost

In TV box selection the “do we need GMS” question is often left until last, yet it determines which markets the product can reach and what the cost structure looks like.
The essential difference
AOSP is the Android Open Source Project: the system can be freely customised, no Google services are preinstalled, and there are no Google compatibility requirements. GMS is Google Mobile Services, requiring compatibility testing before Google Play, YouTube and similar apps can be preinstalled.
The most visible difference for users: without GMS you cannot install apps from Google Play, and YouTube will not work properly.
Choose by target market
Products aimed at European and American retail channels essentially require GMS, or channels will not stock them. The HS86 PRO 14 box runs Android 14 on RK3518 with GMS preinstalled, complete I/O (HDMI, USB 3.0 and USB 2.0, AV, TF, optical SPDIF), dual-band Wi-Fi 6 with gigabit LAN and CE / FCC / ROHS certification — the standard configuration on that route.
For domestic or purely commercial scenarios, AOSP is more flexible. The HS89 T19 media player is built on RK3539 running Android 14 with AOSP, supporting native YouTube services, with HDMI output (including extension cable), USB 2.0 and Type-C power. The system can be deeply customised — well suited to locking down the interface, restricting operations or preinstalling your own applications.
Commercial customisation can go further
Where a project needs reliable operation rather than an app ecosystem, a customised system is worth more. The HS89 T19 PRO media player ships with a customised Android 12 Pro build, uses an Amlogic A311D hexa-core (4×Cortex-A73 + 2×Cortex-A53), supports 8K H.265/H.264 decoding and HDMI 2.1 TX, and provides gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2. It is designed for 24/7 continuous playback stability, aimed at living room 4K/8K cinema, advertising playback and enterprise showrooms.
Weighing cost against schedule
The GMS route costs more than licensing: it includes compatibility testing time and effort. The AOSP route saves that but leaves you maintaining the system and its upgrades. Fold both into total cost rather than comparing unit prices alone.
Specifications are on the HS89 T19 PRO product page. We are glad to discuss system customisation options with you.
