Fanless Thermal Design: Surviving a 40°C Shop Floor
The fan is a device’s most fragile part; fanless design is where industrial reliability starts.
Three heat-path principles
- Short path: SoC → vapor chamber → enclosure; every layer of thermal resistance eats margin;
- Area: size fins from ~5 cm²/W of full-load power as a starting point;
- Orientation: vertical fins ride the chimney effect; horizontal placement costs 30%.
The math
- RK3588 at 12 W: die-cast shell + internal vapor chamber keeps junctions under 85°C at 40°C ambient;
- Thermal pads: thinner is better, 0.5-1 mm ideal;
- Surface treatment (anodize/bead-blast) shifts radiative cooling 10-15%.
Fanless isn’t “omit the fan” — it’s thermal design that starts at chip placement.
