Inside the RK3539 Platform: A55 @1.92GHz, Mali-G310 and AV1 Hardware Decode

hs89-mini-15 featured

If you had to summarise the technical through-line of the 2026 TV box market in one sentence, it would be this: AV1 hardware decoding has moved from a bonus feature to a baseline requirement. Follow that thread and you understand why Rockchip’s RK3539 tier deserves a closer look.

Why AV1 starts to matter

AV1 is the royalty-free next-generation video codec, saving roughly 20–30% of bitrate at equivalent quality compared with H.265. For streaming platforms that means lower bandwidth cost, which is why AV1’s share of catalogue content has risen steadily over the past two years. For endpoint devices a problem follows: a box without AV1 hardware decoding must either decode in software — high CPU load, more heat, dropped frames — or simply cannot play the content. RK3539 includes hardware decoding for AV1, VP9 and H.265, which is its core advantage in this tier.

Where RK3539 sits

RK3539 uses a quad-core Cortex-A55 @1.92GHz with a Mali-G310 GPU. Compared with the previous generation’s common Cortex-A53 plus Mali 450 MP2 pairing, both clock speed and GPU architecture improve while retaining the low power characteristics of quad A55. Memory and storage use EMCP packaging across three tiers — 2GB+16GB, 4GB+32GB and 4GB+64GB — making it easy to split a product line by price band.

Networking provides 2.4G/5G dual-band Wi-Fi 6 with Bluetooth 5.4, and video output is HDMI 2.1 at 4K@60fps. The OS is Android 14.

Three form factors, three scenarios

The HS89 MINI 15 box takes the compact route, with dual USB 2.0 and a gigabit port, serving both living room cinema and enterprise info display. Its role is small footprint, sufficient I/O, controllable cost — well suited to volume deployment.

The HS89 PRO 15 box has the most complete I/O: on top of the MINI it pairs USB 3.0 with USB 2.0 and offers storage up to 4GB+64GB. For high-bitrate local playback or attaching peripherals, the PRO model has more headroom.

The HS89 T15 TV stick fits the same platform into a 100×33×13mm body with Type-C power and direct HDMI plug-in. Its significance is extending RK3539 capability to mobile and travel scenarios — previously this tier of performance was only available in box form.

How to read the difference from older platforms

The biggest change in the RK3539 platform is not benchmark scores but decoding capability and wireless specification. AV1 hardware decoding keeps it from falling behind as content evolves over the coming years, while Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4 make it more stable in crowded multi-device environments. If a procurement plan spans three years or more, those two points deserve more weight than a few percentage points of CPU clock.

All three models support OEM customisation; specifications and downloads are on the HS89 PRO 15 product page.
