Dolby Vision and HDR10+: What to Look For in a TV Box

x5m featured

HDR format selection is often reduced to “does it support Dolby Vision”, but what actually determines the viewing experience is a whole chain: source format, box decoding capability, HDMI version and the display itself.

Map the chain first

HDR content travels from source to screen, and if any link does not support it, the result falls back to ordinary SDR. That means a box supporting Dolby Vision paired with a TV that does not — or a cable without sufficient bandwidth — ends up in the same place.

HDMI version is a hard gate

Both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision need adequate transport bandwidth. The X88 PRO X5M box provides HDMI 2.1b output at 4K@60fps with optional Dolby Vision, and supports HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG. It uses a 6nm Amlogic S905X5M quad-core Cortex-A55 @2.0GHz with Mali-G310, gigabit LAN and dual-band Wi-Fi, and 4GB + 32GB eMMC storage (2GB/64GB/128GB optional).

Decode capability and output capability are different things

Many specification sheets simply say “supports 4K” without distinguishing decode support from output support. The HS89 PRO 15 box runs RK3539 with HDMI 2.1 output at 4K@60fps and AV1/VP9/H.265 hardware decoding; the X88 PRO 14 box runs RK3518 with HDMI 2.0b output at 4K@60fps. Both handle conventional 4K playback, but they differ in HDR format coverage.

Selection advice

If downstream users or channels specifically care about Dolby Vision and HDR10+ source compatibility, choose an S905X5M class platform and write HDR support into the specification. The X88 PRO X5M combines HDMI 2.1b with optional Dolby Vision and HDR10+/HDR10/HLG — among the more complete offerings at this price point.

For conventional 4K playback only, mature platforms are the better value and there is no reason to pay for HDR formats you will not use. One reminder: whatever the box supports, the final result still depends on the display, so confirm the screen’s HDR capability before purchasing. Specifications are on the X88 PRO X5M product page.
