Home VLANs: Three Networks, One Router
Household network chaos comes from “everything on one network”. VLANs are the cheapest order.
Three-network plan
- VLAN 1 main: phones, PCs, NAS — trusted devices;
- VLAN 20 IoT: cameras and smart plugs — internet only, no access to main;
- VLAN 30 guest: internet only, rate-limited.
Rules
- Main → IoT: allowed (you control smart devices);
- IoT → main: blocked (camera footage never leaves its segment);
- Everyone reaches the internet.
One RT28/OpenWrt box does all three — even a compromised camera can’t touch your laptop.
