Box Audio Outputs: ARC, eARC and SPDIF Compared
Picture quality lives in the SoC; sound quality lives in the cabling. Three paths, three jobs.
The three paths
- HDMI ARC: one cable back to TV/soundbar, carries 5.1 — the universal choice;
- eARC: ARC enhanced — lossless Atmos needs support on both ends;
- SPDIF optical: the veteran AV receiver’s lifeline; stable Dolby/DTS bitstream, no Atmos.
Wiring advice
- Soundbar owners: eARC first, ARC second;
- Legacy receivers: box SPDIF straight into the receiver, video to the TV;
- Set the box’s audio output to Bitstream, or you’ll get stereo PCM only.
