Choosing a TV Box SoC in 2026: 6nm S905X5M vs RK3518 and RK3528A

x5m featured

The most easily overlooked step in TV box selection — and the one that shapes the final experience most — is choosing the SoC. Between two quad-core Cortex-A55 parts, the gap between Amlogic’s 6nm S905X5M and Rockchip’s RK3518/RK3528A is wider than a spec sheet suggests.

Process and efficiency: 6nm is not marketing

The X88 PRO X5M carries the S905X5M — quad-core Cortex-A55 @2.0GHz on a 6nm process, with a Mali-G310 GPU. The direct result of the newer node is lower power at the same clock and far less tendency to throttle under sustained load. For a box that stays powered on year-round, that shows up most in summer: lower chassis temperature and less fan noise.

The gap in picture quality and output

The X5M outputs HDMI 2.1b at 4K@60fps, with optional Dolby Vision plus HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG support. By comparison, the X88 PRO 14 (RK3518) and X88 PRO 13 (RK3528A) use HDMI 2.0b at 4K@60fps with a Mali 450 MP2 GPU — a stable, mature path.

If downstream customers or end users care about Dolby Vision and HDR10+ source compatibility, the S905X5M platform is the better fit in this tier. For conventional 4K playback, the mature HDMI 2.0b options are more cost-effective.

Networking and I/O

All three offer 2.4G/5G dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0. On wired networking, the X5M and X88 PRO 14 both provide gigabit RJ45, while the X88 PRO 13 uses 10/100M. For USB, the X5M provides 2× USB 2.0, whereas the X88 PRO 14 and PRO 13 pair USB 3.0 with USB 2.0 — an advantage for local playback of large files. The X88 PRO 13 additionally offers optical SPDIF audio output, convenient for older amplifiers and home theatre setups.

OS versions and ecosystem

The X5M runs Android 14.0, the X88 PRO 14 also Android 14.0, and the X88 PRO 13 Android 13.0. All three sit in the recent-version range, so app compatibility differs little. On storage, the X5M offers 4GB DDR with 32GB eMMC, configurable to 2GB/64GB/128GB, while the X88 PRO 14 and PRO 13 step through 1+8G, 2+16G and 4+32G.

Reaching a conclusion

Better efficiency, Dolby Vision / HDR10+ compatibility, longer lifecycle: the S905X5M platform — the X88 PRO X5M.

USB 3.0 local playback with tighter cost control: the X88 PRO 14 (RK3518) is the balanced choice.

Optical audio output and maximum cost sensitivity: the X88 PRO 13 (RK3528A) fits better.

All three support OEM customisation. See the X88 PRO X5M product page for full specifications and downloads, or contact us directly for a platform positioning assessment.
