RT28 as a Side Router: Whole-Home Split Routing Without Touching the Main Router
The beauty of a side router: your main router’s config stays untouched.
Two wiring modes
- Gateway mode: RT28 on a LAN port with a same-subnet static IP; devices that need split routing point their gateway at it (manually or via DHCP);
- One-armed: one port does both directions — simpler, but throughput halves; gigabit households should use gateway mode.
Measured
Gateway mode sustains 940 Mbps NAT; AdGuard + split rules idle at 15% CPU. Kids’ devices go through RT28’s filtering while adults connect directly — per-device flexibility is the whole point.
