Frigate NVR on RK3588: NPU Person Detection Without the CPU Bill
Traditional NVRs record anything that moves. Frigate with NPU object detection separates people, cars and pets — and RK3588’s 6-TOPS NPU is exactly the right accelerator.
Measured results
- Detection model: MobileNet-SSD on NPU, under 30 ms per frame;
- CPU load: four 1080p cameras under continuous detection keep the whole box below 25%;
- False alarms: tree shadows and pets stop triggering — you only get person events;
- Recording: event-driven clips with a 10 s pre-roll cut disk usage roughly in half.
Deployment advice
For 4-8 home cameras an 8 GB RK3588 NAS unit is the sweet spot; run detection on the camera’s sub-stream and record the main stream. Frigate configuration and NPU driver setup are covered in our documentation center.
