eMMC or NVMe SSD? Choosing Storage for RK3588 Devices
When choosing an RK3588 device, storage moves the experience more than the CPU does. The two routes serve different jobs.
Measured comparison
- Sequential read: eMMC 5.1 around 320 MB/s vs 2000+ MB/s on NVMe;
- 4K random write: an 8-10× gap — databases and containers strongly favor SSD;
- Endurance: eMMC uses TLC NAND; heavy write workloads want an SSD;
- Cost: SSD variants run 100-200 RMB higher, but the drive is user-replaceable.
Recommendations
- OS disk, firmware images, light-write devices: eMMC is fine;
- NAS, databases, surveillance, heavy Docker: NVMe is a must;
- Belt and suspenders: OS on eMMC, data on SSD, each backing the other up.
