How to Choose an RK3588 Dev Board in 2026: From 8K Display to Edge AI

RK3588 has become the de-facto platform for mid-to-high-end edge computing: 4×A76 + 4×A55, a 6-TOPS NPU, 8K video decoding and a mature Debian / Ubuntu / Android ecosystem. But boards vary widely in form factor. Here is a four-dimension framework to pick the right one.

1. Compute and memory first

For edge AI workloads (object detection, OCR, speech) the NPU is rarely the bottleneck — memory bandwidth is. Multi-stream video and 8K playback call for 8 GB RAM; lightweight gateways are fine at 4 GB. The RP01A (RK3588S) targets cost-sensitive display applications, while the 01B EDGE-RK3588 adds DP/HDMI dual display, M.2 PCIe 3.0 and a richer industrial I/O set — ideal as a project reference unit.

2. Display and video I/O shape your product

  • Dual independent screens (e.g. POS + customer display): you need HDMI + DP/HDMI-In, which the 01B provides out of the box;
  • Multi-camera input: check MIPI CSI lanes and ISP capability;
  • Storage expansion: M.2 NVMe is a must for NAS-style and video-backflow designs.

3. Software support is the real long-term cost

A board is a one-time purchase; software support is the recurring cost. All Hugsun RUPA-series boards ship with mainline kernel enablement and long-term firmware maintenance. Schematics, flashing guides and SDKs are freely available in our documentation center, cutting weeks off secondary development.
