Building Your First Home NAS on an RK3572 Box: Full Assembly and OS Choice
First NAS projects rarely fail on performance; they fail on missing checklist items — screws, a system drive, cooling. List everything first.
List the parts first
- Drives to match needs: start with two bays in RAID1; avoid SMR drives entirely (dedicated guide later);
- Separate system from data: OS on eMMC, data on spinning disks — reinstalls never touch data;
- OS choice: fnOS for appliance use, Debian + Cockpit for tinkerers; both support RK3572.
After assembly, run a 24-hour SMART full scan before storing data — new-drive failures cluster in the first two weeks.
