NAS Drive Selection: PMR/SMR and Surveillance Drives, Demystified
Half of NAS horror stories start with the wrong drive.
Three key facts
- PMR vs SMR: shingled (SMR) drives collapse on random writes and can fail RAID rebuilds — buy perpendicular (PMR) only;
- Surveillance drives: cheap and 24/7-optimized, but poor at frequent small writes — great for footage, bad for system disks;
- Enterprise drives: vibration protection and higher workload ratings; overkill for light home use, justified for heavy multi-user writes.
Decision tree
System/cache → SSD. Media library → 4 TB-class PMR surveillance drives, best value. Irreplaceable data → RAID 1 plus an offsite copy. Buy 1.5× current needs — drives only fill up.
