Modbus TCP Gateways: Connecting Legacy Devices to Modern Platforms
80% of factory equipment speaks only Modbus RTU while modern platforms listen for MQTT/TCP — the gateway is the translator.
Three topologies
- Single gateway: one unit chains 8-16 RS-485 devices — small lines;
- Distributed: one gateway per zone, converting locally, aggregating over Ethernet;
- Edge: the gateway cleans and aggregates locally, upstreaming only results.
Field notes
- Map registers first; address misalignment is the classic failure;
- Grade polling: alarms 1 s, trends 10 s, reports 60 s;
- RS-485 termination resistors and common ground — half-day mysteries usually end here.
