Home NAS Buying Guide: Appliance, DIY or ARM Box
The NAS market has three routes for three kinds of buyers.
The triangle
- Appliances (Synology/QNAP): the easiest software, the highest price — 2-bay from ~2,000 RMB;
- x86 DIY: performance and expansion ceiling, paid for in power and noise;
- ARM-box NAS (RK3588): 500-800 RMB, two bays, low power and a Docker ecosystem — covers 90% of home needs.
By persona
- Photo backup + movies: ARM box;
- VMs and all-in-one: x86 DIY;
- Geek who won’t tinker: appliance.
Start with an ARM box and upgrade only if demand proves it — most NAS mistakes are buying too big, not too small.
