eMMC Longevity: Making Storage Last Five More Years

eMMC isn’t a consumable; configured well, it lasts twice as long.

The physics

  • P/E cycles: TLC NAND endures ~1,000-3,000 cycles; a 16 GB part totals 30-90 TB written;
  • Write amplification: frequent small writes multiply real wear 2-5×;
  • Killer workloads: log databases, download caches, constant recording on eMMC.

Five life-saving settings

  • Mount logs/caches on tmpfs or an external SSD;
  • Disable unnecessary swap or lower swappiness;
  • Run databases in WAL mode with periodic compaction;
  • Monitor SMART health/lifetime indicators;
  • Queue heavy writes into nightly batch jobs.
