Dolby Vision vs HDR10+: How to Actually Get HDR on a Box
The suffix after “HDR” on the spec sheet decides how much highlight detail you’ll actually see.
Technical differences
- HDR10: static metadata, one brightness map for the whole film;
- HDR10+: per-scene dynamic metadata, pushed by the Samsung camp;
- Dolby Vision: 12-bit dynamic metadata, the Netflix/Disney+ mainstream;
- On boxes: SoC + system + source must all support it, or you fall back to HDR10.
Verdict
Streaming users should prioritize Dolby Vision compatibility; local-library viewers mostly meet HDR10 sources and shouldn’t overpay. The RK3539 flagship boxes are currently the best-covered tier.
