Choosing a Digital Signage Board: Are RK3566 and RK3399 Still Worth Buying?

The signage industry updates slowly, and RK3399-era designs still ship in volume. For projects kicking off in 2026, how should you choose the SoC?

First, the four hard requirements of a signage board

  • Decoding: 4K@60 H.265 is the baseline; dual 4K splits demand a stronger display pipeline;
  • Display interfaces: ideally both LVDS/eDP (legacy panels) and HDMI output;
  • Portrait/landscape adaptation: system-level support in rotated frames affects project timelines more than hardware does;
  • 7×24 stability: sealed boxes running around the clock make thermal design and eMMC wear management hidden test points.

Where RK3399 and RK3566 stand now

RK3399 (e.g. the X99 platform) has dual-A72 decode headroom and an extremely mature ecosystem — perfectly fine for sustaining existing deployments. New projects should lean RK3566: the newer VOP2 display pipeline handles dual independent screens more cleanly at lower power (see the X88 PRO 20). Both ship Android launcher firmware with boot autostart, scheduled power and remote-publish integration.
