ARM Core Board ODM: The Six Stages from Requirements to Mass Production

Teams new to core board customization often reduce it to “draw a carrier board, flash an image”. In real projects, it’s process management that decides success or failure. Using our M-RK3588S core board as the reference, here is the standard six-stage ODM flow.

Six stages and key deliverables

  • 1. Requirements review: interface list, power budget, temperature range, volume — outputs a requirements spec;
  • 2. Architecture design: SoC selection, power tree, BOM costing — a design package in 1-2 weeks;
  • 3. PCB and prototyping: core + carrier co-tuning; first samples focus on high-speed signal integrity;
  • 4. System enablement: U-Boot / kernel / driver trimming, SDK handoff to your software team;
  • 5. Reliability validation: thermal cycling, burn-in, EMC pre-scan — flushing out long-tail issues pre-production;
  • 6. Pilot run: small-batch yield verification before ramping.

The two stages customers underestimate

First, software enablement — BSP debugging routinely outweighs the hardware effort. Second, reliability validation — teams that skip it almost always pay for it within three months of mass production. Choosing a supplier with volume experience is essentially buying certainty in those two stages.
