Adding a 4G/5G Module over Mini PCIe: Engineering Essentials

Attaching a 4G/5G module to an industrial router or edge gateway looks like a matter of inserting a card. In practice, half the engineering problems come from power and antennas rather than the module itself.

Start with expansion capability

The 03R EDGE-RT28 industrial router board provides a Mini PCIe expansion slot for 4G/5G modules, alongside USB, HDMI and TF card interfaces. Power input is DC 12V/3A with a maximum system draw of roughly 20W, weight 0.8kg, operating range -10℃ to +60℃, and support for ImmortalWrt and mainline OpenWrt.

Power is the first trap

A 4G/5G module draws current spikes during network search and transmission, and those spikes are far above average consumption. Design the supply against average draw and the symptoms are intermittent connectivity and modules dropping offline. Engineering practice is to leave dedicated transient headroom for the module and watch for voltage drop along the supply trace. A meaningful share of that 20W maximum system draw exists precisely to cover such peaks.

Antennas and shielding

Antenna gain directly affects performance in weak-signal environments. EDGE-RT28 specifies Wi-Fi antenna gain of 4dBi/5dBi; cellular antennas must be chosen separately by band and installation environment. Metal cabinets attenuate signals significantly, so antennas may need to be routed outside the enclosure. Interference between the module and Wi-Fi also needs to be handled through layout and shielding, otherwise the two suppress each other’s sensitivity.

Firmware and dialling

In the OpenWrt ecosystem, cellular dialling is usually handled by ModemManager or vendor-specific scripts. When choosing a module, prefer models with solid community support — it saves a great deal of adaptation work. This is where multiple network ports pay off: EDGE-RT28 integrates 3× gigabit LAN plus 1× gigabit WAN, all configurable, so cellular and wired links can be planned separately for policy routing or link backup.

Typical deployments

Industrial 4G/5G routers, edge gateways, smart IoT terminals, and indoor or outdoor digital signage. What these share is difficult cabling or a need for mobile connectivity, in environments where an ordinary commercial router does not belong. Specifications are on the EDGE-RT28 product page.
