Boot Time Optimization: A Practical Path from 30s to 8s
The cardinal sin of boot optimization is guessing. First attribute time to phases with tools, then attack the longest.
Measure before optimizing
- Measure: systemd-analyze blame for userspace services, kernel printk timestamps for the kernel phase, bootchart for the whole picture;
- Usual wins: disable unused services and drivers, defer non-critical units, parallelize dependency chains, and move the app earlier into initramfs;
- U-Boot phase: disable USB probing and network wait (bootdelay=0) — this alone often saves two to three seconds.
Below about ten seconds returns diminish — further gains require kernel slimming, so re-evaluate whether the effort still pays.
