Immich Self-Hosted Photos on RK3588: Real-World Behavior
Immich is the closest self-hosted match to Google Photos, but it is hungrier than Jellyfin. It runs fine on RK3588 — as long as you understand its resource curve.
Do the resource math first
- Initial indexing is the heavy part: clustering faces across tens of thousands of photos can take hours. Run it on the NAS-class unit and keep it off eMMC;
- Machine learning is optional: if you only want timelines and backup, disable ML and memory drops from 2-4 GB to under 500 MB;
- Phone backup needs background permissions: keep Background App Refresh on iOS and remove battery optimization on Android.
With 16 GB RAM and NVMe storage, an 80k-photo library browses smoothly and face search responds in about a second.
