PLC Data Collection Gateways: Supporting Multiple Vendors in Practice
The value of a data gateway is one box talking to every PLC on site, which demands broad protocol coverage and tag-list configuration.
Multi-protocol is the bulk of the work
- Protocol coverage: S7, MC, FINS and Modbus TCP are the big four — build a compatibility matrix and test unit by unit;
- Tag lists: import point definitions from CSV or Excel; clicking hundreds of tags in a web UI does not scale on site;
- Polling periods: 100ms for fast tags like servo status, 5s for slow variables like temperature — group polling beats one global period.
Always bring packet capture and protocol logs to commissioning — they immediately distinguish can’t-connect from connected-but-no-data, which need opposite fixes.
