SoM or Development Board: Decide This Before You Start
Dev boards suit rapid validation and small batches; SoMs suit productization and volume. The test is whether you have an enclosure and a production plan.
Where each form factor fits
- Dev boards: full interfaces, lots of documentation, running immediately — great for prototypes and pilot runs, but rarely shell-ready;
- SoMs: SoC, DDR and eMMC on a stamp-hole or connector module, with a carrier you design so size and I/O are fully controlled;
- Volume considerations: a SoM design only respins the carrier, and EMC and certification reports for the module can be reused.
The rule of thumb is simple: if you expect more than 500 units, go SoM — better long-run cost and far more iteration flexibility.
