Upgrading from RK3568 to RK3588: Worth It, and How

Changing the main SoC means redoing packages, power, DDR topology and thermals — that’s a respin, not a component swap. Budget it as a new project.

An upgrade touches the whole board

  • Is it worth it: if the bottleneck is NPU or multi-core CPU, yes; if it’s storage or networking, a new SoC changes nothing;
  • Software migration: BSP, drivers and kernel versions all shift, and most applications need rebuilds and adaptation — allow six to ten weeks;
  • Design for it: if a product family is planned, adopt a SoM form factor from the start so future generations swap the module, not the carrier.

Teams that have done an upgrade once all regret not starting with a SoM — keeping the carrier and swapping modules cuts iteration cost by roughly 70%.
