The Complete Jellyfin Subtitle Guide: ASS, External Files and Burn-in Cost
Subtitles are where most Jellyfin setups break: embedded tracks not showing, styled ASS turned into white boxes, burn-in causing stutter. Every one of these traces back to the transcode path.
Which subtitle path to pick
- Embedded SRT/PGS passes through without transcoding — prefer muxing subtitles into the mkv container;
- Styled ASS needs libass rendering; when the client can’t render it the server must burn it in — the only path that costs real CPU. Restrict “burn subtitles” to ASS only;
- External subtitles work when named identically to the video (movie.chs.srt) in the same folder, with the language tag present.
Burning 1080p ASS on RK3588 costs roughly 15-25% CPU — acceptable; for 4K burn-in, switch to a client that renders subtitles natively.
