2, 4 or 8 GB: Matching RAM to the Workload
RAM carries the steepest upsell margin — and hurts most when underbought.
Scenario table
- 2 GB: single-app TV boxes and dedicated terminals — fine, but install nothing extra;
- 4 GB: mainstream home boxes with light multitasking, entry NAS — the sweet spot;
- 8 GB: Docker hosts, all-in-one builds, heavy browsing — NAS/server tier;
- 16 GB: virtualization, local models, dev machines — by demand.
Rules of thumb
- Embedded RAM can’t be upgraded later — buy 50% above expected load;
- Judge by available memory, not nominal: the OS eats 1-1.5 GB on day one.
