Are Used TV Boxes Worth It? Spotting Refurbs and the Risk List
The used-box market is murky but not off-limits — if you can inspect.
Refurb detection
- Screws: tool marks and stripped heads are proof;
- Ports: oxidized HDMI and loose USB = heavy use;
- System: check uptime and root traces on first boot;
- Serial: verify firmware support on the vendor site; skip end-of-life models.
Price anchors
- Used above 60% of new retail: just buy new — you get 12 months warranty and current firmware;
- Discontinued models: skip at any price; dead firmware is fatal.
Verdict: under 50% of retail for a current model, go ahead — otherwise the new unit is cheaper in every way that matters.
