LPDDR4 vs DDR4: The Memory Choice Nobody Reads Past “4 GB”
Spec sheets just say “4 GB”, but LPDDR4 and DDR4 differ where it counts.
Four differences
- Bandwidth: LPDDR4X delivers ~1.2× effective bandwidth at the same clocks — GPU and decode benefit;
- Power: LPDDR4 idles 40%+ lower — mandatory for battery devices;
- Soldering: LPDDR4 is fixed; DDR4 SO-DIMM slots allow upgrades;
- Cost: LPDDR4 saves board space, slightly lower BOM.
Choosing
- Boxes, tablets, battery devices: prefer LPDDR4X;
- Industrial units needing future RAM upgrades: SO-DIMM DDR4 designs;
- Capacity beats type — 4 GB of LPDDR4 beats 2 GB of anything.
