eMMC Longevity: Making Storage Last Five More Years
eMMC isn’t a consumable; configured well, it lasts twice as long.
The physics
- P/E cycles: TLC NAND endures ~1,000-3,000 cycles; a 16 GB part totals 30-90 TB written;
- Write amplification: frequent small writes multiply real wear 2-5×;
- Killer workloads: log databases, download caches, constant recording on eMMC.
Five life-saving settings
- Mount logs/caches on tmpfs or an external SSD;
- Disable unnecessary swap or lower swappiness;
- Run databases in WAL mode with periodic compaction;
- Monitor SMART health/lifetime indicators;
- Queue heavy writes into nightly batch jobs.
