Remote Access to Your Home NAS: Tailscale vs frp
Two mainstream routes to reach your NAS from outside.
The routes
- Tailscale (start here): zero exposed ports, WireGuard mesh, works after install; relay speeds are limited but direct P2P runs full bandwidth;
- Self-hosted frp: needs a VPS; fully controllable speed and ports — at the price of managing your own security (fail2ban, strong passwords, 2FA).
Measured
- Tailscale P2P: 220 Mbps; relay: 5-20 Mbps;
- frp on a 1 Gbps VPS: 300-500 Mbps, VPS-bound.
Advice
Individuals: Tailscale. With public infrastructure and speed needs: frp. Either way, never expose SMB or admin ports directly to the internet.
