RAID Explained: The Real Trade-offs of RAID 0/1/5
RAID is about availability, not backup. Internalize that and the choice becomes clear.
The truths
- RAID 0: double speed and capacity, total loss on one failure — re-downloadable data only;
- RAID 1: two mirrored drives at 50% capacity — the stable home choice;
- RAID 5: 3+ drives at n-1 capacity, one drive can fail — but a second failure during rebuild kills everything.
For homes
- 2 bays: RAID 1 for irreplaceable photos and documents;
- Re-downloadable media: single disk synced periodically to a second;
- Iron law: RAID ≠ backup — deletion and ransomware aren’t what RAID defends against.
