The 4K HDR Box Acceptance Checklist: Ten Minutes to the Truth
4K HDR is where marketing language goes to inflate. Six checks, ten minutes.
The checklist
- Resolution: open the output settings — no 4K60 mode means fake 4K;
- HDR: play a YouTube HDR test clip; the system should flag HDR;
- Decode: play a 4K60 HEVC 10-bit file locally; under 30% CPU = hardware decode;
- Color depth: a 10-bit gradient test — look for banding in skies;
- Network: iperf the link; 4K streaming needs a stable 40 Mbps+;
- Thermals: after 30 min playback, case under 45°C is a pass.
