k3s at the Edge: RK3588 as Kubernetes Nodes
“Edge Kubernetes” sounds like overkill until your edge services pass ten. Then k3s stops being a toy and becomes infrastructure.
Three-node results
- Cluster: 1 server + 2 agents, all RK3588;
- Footprint: k3s idles at ~512 MB RAM per node;
- Scheduling: pod drift and self-healing work; services migrate within 90 s of a node power cut;
- Storage: Longhorn on NVMe delivers usable performance.
Who it’s for
Multi-box store deployments, factory service pools, lab emulation. Hobbyists should stay with Docker Compose; the moment you need service-level HA, a RK3588 cluster is the most serious option in a four-figure-RMB budget.
