Feeding Multiple Cameras into RK3588: MIPI, USB and RTSP Compared

“How many cameras can this box take?” depends entirely on the access method. Three routes, one answer each.

Three routes

  • MIPI CSI: six native lanes feeding the ISP zero-copy — lowest latency and load, first choice for robots and inspection rigs;
  • USB cameras: UVC plug-and-play; 2-4× 1080p comfortably under USB3;
  • RTSP streams: unbounded in theory, limited by decode and bandwidth — 16× 720p sub-streams detect fine in practice.

Guidance

Product integrators should count MIPI lanes; field deployments should count Ethernet ports and switch capacity. Our M-series core boards expose multiple MIPI lanes natively for camera-array projects.
