RK3588 8K Decode, Tested: Real Capability or Checkbox?
“Supports 8K” has become wallpaper. We pushed real 8K sources through RK3588 to find the actual ceiling.
Results
- 8K30 HEVC: smooth hardware decode, CPU under 20%;
- 8K24 VP9 (YouTube 8K): equally effortless;
- Output: HDMI 2.1 handles 8K30 and 4K120;
- Bottleneck: not the silicon — it’s source availability and cables.
What it means
Treat 8K as headroom: the practical wins are 4K120, multi-display 4K output and future-proofing. Don’t pay extra for 8K alone — but don’t worry it can’t deliver, either.
