RK3588 Dual Boot: OpenWrt + Debian on One Box
The cleanest way to make one box serve two jobs is dual boot: a u-boot menu picks the partition, OpenWrt and Debian stay isolated from each other.
Layout
- Partitions: first 2 GB of eMMC to OpenWrt, the rest to Debian, data on SSD;
- Boot: a u-boot env var sets the default; enter the menu when needed;
- Role switch: OpenWrt takes PPPoE as main router; Debian runs static-IP side-router duty;
- Gotchas: align NTP and MAC addresses across both systems or devices will drop off the network.
Real-world feel
A switch is a 20-second reboot. Compared with VMs there’s almost no performance tax — firmware images and partitioning scripts are downloadable from our documentation center.
