Jellyfin 4K Hardware Decode on RK3588: Tested and Tuned
Software-decoding 4K is miserable. RK3588 ships an 8K60 hardware decoder, and with V4L2 drivers Jellyfin can use it directly.
Test numbers
- 4K HEVC 10-bit direct play: under 10% CPU, no dropped frames;
- 1080p transcode: roughly 40% CPU per live transcode stream;
- Concurrency: two direct-play streams plus one 1080p transcode run stable together;
- Subtitles: fancy ASS subtitles render on the GPU with manageable load.
Settings that matter
Pick V4L2 hardware acceleration in Jellyfin, disable transcoding where clients can direct-play, and prefer HEVC sources to save bandwidth. For home use RK3588 is a genuinely capable small media server — the full setup guide lives in our documentation center.
