Building a Home NAS on RK3588: Low Power, Big Storage, flyOS-Ready

x86 NAS units are powerful, but a constant 40-60 W idle draw puts many families off. The RK3588-based NAS appliance keeps typical power under 10 W while retaining 8K decode and a 6-TOPS NPU — so the same box doubles as a home media server when idle.

How to configure the hardware

  • Storage: M.2 NVMe as cache plus large SATA/HDD data drives is the sweet spot;
  • Networking: dual 2.5 GbE is the 2026 baseline for home NAS;
  • Memory: 4 GB handles NAS + Docker comfortably, 8 GB gives headroom.

Choosing the OS

flyOS (fnOS) support for the RK3528/3566/3588 platforms is mature, with a Synology-like web UI; tinkerers can run Debian or Armbian instead. Hugsun NAS units come pre-validated with mainstream NAS systems and ship with full flashing and recovery documentation.

The electricity math

At an 8 W average and 24/7 uptime, annual consumption is roughly 35 kWh — under one-sixth of a typical x86 NAS. Over two or three years, the savings alone pay for an extra large-capacity drive.
